• The power-spectrum of heart rate variability in sleep follows a broken power-law, characterizable by two-slopes, separated by a breakpoint, indicating fractal properties of the interbeat interval series. • Aging is associated with a shift of the spectrum toward lower frequencies–marked by decreases in the high-frequency intercept, breakpoint frequency, and low-frequency peak frequency. • Most variance in LF/HF band power is explained by changes in the fractal parameters, not oscillatory activity.
