A bromoform-based Investigational Veterinary Product reduced methane emissions and increased feed conversion efficiency of yearling steers when delivered via drinking water

The aim of this experiment was to investigate the efficacy of a bromoform-based (tribromomethane) Investigational Veterinary Product (BB-IVP) on enteric methane production, productivity, carcass traits, and health of cattle when administered via the drinking water of steers fed a total mixed ration. Droughtmaster steers (376 ± 32.4 kg liveweight) were allocated to either a control group (CON; n = 10) offered water without the BB-IVP, or a treatment group (n = 10), where 6.45 mg of stabilised bromoform was included/kg of drinking water in the form of a BB-IVP; this equated to an average of 19 mg bromoform/kg dry matter intake and 0.5 mg bromoform/kg liveweight over the experimental period. Steers consuming the BB-IVP via drinking water had lower feed intake (P < 0.001), with no differences in liveweight gain (P = 0.99), resulting in 15% higher feed conversion efficiency (P = 0.02) compared to the CON steers. Steers consuming the BB-IVP via drinking water had 37.1%, 26.2%, and 36.2% lower methane production (P < 0.001), methane yield (P < 0.001), and methane intensity (P = 0.01), respectively, compared to CON steers. Administering the BB-IVP through drinking water reduced enteric methane production of steers and increased feed conversion efficiency with no detrimental effects on steer health. Water delivery of the BB-IVP may have broader application in extensive ruminant production systems that utilise water reticulation, but further research is required to demonstrate this under different feed-bases, climatic conditions and animal classes to optimise inclusion rates.
