• A compact AFPC/Al shield is proposed for space-constrained applications. • The AFPC material model is calibrated and validated. • The protection mechanism and performance of the AFPC/Al shield are clarified. • Impact velocity and layer thickness effects on energy dissipation and damage are revealed.
