This study proposes a component-adaptive insertion and deletion approach named CAID for MMC-based explicit topology optimization to reduce the dependence on prescribed initial component layouts. Variable width B-spline components are employed to provide an explicit and computer aided design compatible geometry description. Component insertion is guided by the density sensitivity indicator (DSI) and implemented through a competitive multi-seed strategy under a relaxed volume upper bound. Furthermore, an engulfed deletion mechanism is used to remove redundant or persistently inefficient components while preserving structural connectivity. A two-stage volume control scheme is implemented to balance early exploration with subsequent refinement at the target volume. Numerical experiments on four two-dimensional benchmark problems covering stiffness design and compliant mechanism synthesis demonstrate that the proposed method obtains consistent topologies from both blank and biased initial layouts and shows limited sensitivity to key algorithmic parameters.
