• Fe vacancies enable spontaneous H uptake and strong vacancy-H trapping. • Interstitial H increases the uniaxial anisotropy constant with a slight reduction in saturation. • Hydrogen diffuses readily in Fe16N2, but coupled H-vacancy migration is unfavorable.
