• LICS significantly increased SOC content by 5.48% at a global scale. • Strongest SOC gains occurred in tropical, semi-arid, and loamy-soil regions. • Higher degrees of diversification facilitate greater carbon sequestration. • Targeted adoption of LICS could raise cropland SOC by 5.67%.
