Abstract

This study analyzes flame initiation by a heated wall and propagation dynamics in lean mixtures. The modeling is based on two-step chain-branching chemical kinetics, including intermediate radicals. Ignition is achieved by heating the wall for a finite time, after which the wall becomes adiabatic. It is shown that, for fuel Lewis numbers smaller than unity, flame propagation over long distances from the wall is possible in mixtures below the lean flammability limit, a case for which constant-velocity flame propagation is impossible. These solutions represent a new flame dynamics regime in which the distance traveled by the flame increases proportionally to the square root of time. An analytical solution obtained asymptotically for large times is proposed, and it is shown to be in excellent agreement with the numerical results. Interestingly, the radicals Lewis number does not play a significant role in this limit solution, indicating that radicals follow steady state assumptions.
