• A novel auxetic metamaterial is proposed for piezoelectric energy harvesters. • The NRTA improves the stress distribution and induces equivalent NPR response regions. • Analytical and electromechanical models are established for the NRTA-based AEH. • Experiments show that the AEH has higher output power and lower natural frequency. • The design strategy can be extended to other metamaterial-based energy harvesters.
