• A reversible fluorescent probe for Cu2+ determination has been developed. • Probe could identify Cu2+ over other analytes with high sensitivity and selectively. • Probe can be successfully applied for the determination of Cu2+ ion in real water samples. • Probe was successfully applied to the imaging of living cells.
