Abstract

A novel method was developed to valorize ferronickel slag through a series process by producing two functional products, nano silica and heavy metals adsorbent. This approach significantly contributes to the circular economy primarily for ferronickel industry by reducing the huge volume of slag generated from increasing ferronickel productions and mitigating potential risks to the environment. Ferronickel slag (+/- 149 & micro;m) was subjected to a hydrothermal process with 14 M NaOH solution at 220 degrees C for 120 min, resulting in Si-rich filtrate and a solid residue. The filtrate was precipitated to obtain high purity nano silica, while the residue served as an adsorbent. The optimum condition provided a nano silica product with an average particle size of 62.85 +/- 4.34 nm and SiO2 concentration of 95.30%. Adsorption test using the immersion method showed an exceptional result in artificial heavy metal waste (AHW 1 and AHW 2). While the hydrothermal residue displayed amphoteric adsorption properties, RH 700 demonstrated superior performance for cationic heavy metals capture. This process offers an efficient pathway for converting an abundant industrial by-product into high-value, eco-friendly materials, contributing both to resource recovery and environmental protection.
