A critical knowledge gap persists regarding how pressure governs the Fe-contained intermetallic compounds (IMCs) in squeeze casting. By combining calculation of phase diagrams, cooling curve analysis, and microstructure characterization, this study systematically revealed the effects of pressure and Mn/Fe ratio on the type, morphology, and size of Fe-contained IMCs in squeeze cast Al-Si-Mg alloys. The new findings include: A panorama insight into the formation of Fe-contained IMCs under various pressure and Mn/Fe ratio was presented; An initial increase in pressure (0-80 MPa) retards the growth of α-AlFeMnSi and promotes the formation of β-AlFeSi and π-AlFeMgSi (particularly in alloys with low Mn/Fe ratios), but with further increase to 120 MPa, α‑AlFeMnSi becomes the thermodynamically preferred IMCs; In Al-Si-Mg alloys with a Mn/Fe ratio of 1.33 and under an applied pressure of 120 MPa, the majority of IMCs were fine, short rod-like α-AlFeMnSi particles, effectively mitigating the detrimental effects of Fe.
