Diffusion analysis in multicomponent systems has long been hindered by the inability of conventional diffusion-couple methods to yield reliable, physically meaningful interdiffusion coefficients. Earlier approaches to calculating average effective diffusion coefficients and the data obtained using the root-square method were applicable only to the hypothetical case of constant diffusion coefficients. Moreover, these could not be related to the Onsager formalism used to generate the mobility database. Inverse numerical optimisation suffered from non-unique solutions, as no experimental data were available to serve as equality constraints. Renewed interest in diffusion studies, driven by high-entropy alloy research, has spurred the development of alternative diffusion-couple techniques. Among these, constrained diffusion methods—including the pseudo-binary (PB) diffusion couple method and its extensions to pseudo-ternary (PT) and pseudo-quaternary (PQ) methods—have emerged as practical, experimentally feasible strategies for multicomponent systems. This review discusses the theoretical basis, experimental design, and practical implementation of these methods, emphasising the pivotal role of pseudo-binary diffusion profiles. Strategies for generating systematic composition-dependent diffusion data in higher-order systems are critically evaluated.
