Eddy current (EC) sensors are extensively utilized in applications such as displacement measurement, vibration monitoring, and defect detection. However, the presence of unknown metallic surroundings can significantly interfere with EC displacement sensors, limiting their use in complex environments. For large-range EC displacement sensors, mitigating these deviations solely by maintaining a sufficient distance between the sensor and nearby metallic objects is often impractical. Therefore, a novel compensation method is required to mitigate these deviations and expand the applicability of large-range EC displacement sensors. In this study, a smart compensation method is proposed, employing a three-coil EC displacement sensor. We analyzed the process of calculating displacement using data collected under six different operating modes and utilized machine learning algorithms. Experimental results indicated that the proposed compensation method considerably enhanced the performance of the large range EC displacement sensor, effectively reducing deviations and improving linearity, as demonstrated by an increase in the coefficient of determination R 2 from 0.93 to 0.99.
