• Highly productive forests exert strong biogeomorphic control on soil disturbance. • Tree mortality has increased since 2010, mainly due to dieback of Tsuga heterophylla. • Tree mortality is the dominant driver of slope processes and soil redistribution. • Radionuclide data indicate a recent acceleration of erosion rates. • Slope dynamics show low sensitivity to changes in tree species composition.
