• Fabrication of CarboxymethylChitosan and Carboxyl modified GuarGum hydrogels via amide linkage. • The prepared hydrogels exhibited robust mechanical strength and displayed a pH-responsive swelling property. • Biocompatibility of the hydrogels when investigated against human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293) through MTT assay. • The DOX-loaded CCS–CGG hydrogels induced 81.10 % cytotoxicity in MCF-7 breast cancer cells.
