An enhanced self-organizing time division multiple access protocol for wireless communication systems

In wireless communications systems, self-organizing time division multiple access (STDMA) protocol has emerged as an alternative to traditional TDMA based protocols that require strict synchronization and centralized control of resources. STDMA has been used in industry for ship navigation, in automatic identification system (AIS), air traffic navigation in VHF data link Mode 4 (VDL Mode 4) and also proposed for the vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) & unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication systems. In this research, an enhancement to STDMA protocol has been proposed, termed as AG-STDMA, that is based on the use of geometric probability distribution instead of uniform probability distribution used in STDMA protocol, selection of slots for candidate set (CS) compilation based on timeout values in ascending order and unique slot placement methodology for free and externally allocated slots when number of free slots in the CS are less than the protocol threshold WCS<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">min</inf>. The placement of slots according to timeout values in ascending order ensures that transmission slot selection using geometric distribution will result in transmission collision for low duration period as compared to the existing STDMA protocol, even if an externally allocated slot is selected, since the externally allocated slot will be in a free state much sooner as the slots with low timeout values are included in CS. This novel methodology provides improved results in comparison to existing STDMA protocol. Moreover, a mathematical model has been developed for obtaining optimum value for the geometric probability distribution parameter (α) that verifies simulation results. Percentage decrease ranging from approximately 27% to 58% and approximately 18% to 77% has been achieved for Transmission Collisions and Channel Access Delay respectively, justifying the use of AG-STDMA instead of STDMA protocol for future deployment in the communication systems.
