An Olefin Cross-Metathesis Experiment for an Undergraduate Laboratory Course Exhibiting Various Selectivities

Olefin metathesis is a fundamental discovery in chemistry and has been introduced as an experiment for undergraduate students in laboratory courses. As a major progress, olefin cross-metathesis exhibits multiple selectivities, but these selectivities have not been discussed in undergraduate laboratory courses. In this report, we present an inexpensive olefin metathesis experiment that was designed for undergraduate training. The experiment systematically demonstrates several selectivity issues, including (i) substrate-dependent selectivity, (ii) catalyst-dependent selectivity, and (iii) product stereoselectivity.
