Trommel screens, which typically feature cylindrical drums, have long been utilized in waste sorting. This study examines how the geometry of the drum affects screening performance with the aim of informing optimal trommel design. A cylindrical test rig was constructed to evaluate screening performance across various rotational speeds and inclination angles. Concurrently, a coupled multi-body dynamics and discrete element method model was developed to replicate the experimental conditions, and its predictions were compared to the test results. Using the validated model, we assessed the screening performance of trommels with cylindrical, triangular, rectangular, and pentagonal cross-sections. The simulations revealed that the square cross-section delivered the highest screening performance. To validate this finding, a square prototype was fabricated and tested under the same conditions as the cylindrical drum, confirming an improvement in screening efficiency.
