• A novel Bayesian-based method is proposed for structural damage identification. • A hybrid multi-sample objective function is also developed. • The proposed method can effectively locate and quantify structural damage. • The new method shows remarkable noise immunity and excellent ill-posed immunity. • The new Bayesian-based method has many advantages over the current SDI methods.
