In the May issue of Joule, Chunsheng Wang, Kang Xu, and colleagues report an electrolyte for lithium ion batteries with a 4.1 V electrochemical stability window (down to 1.0 V against Li) that is also non-flammable and moisture insensitive. Using a hybrid aqueous/non-aqueous electrolyte composed of water-insalt electrolyte'' (WiSE) with added dimethyl carbonate, they are able to construct a 3.2 V cell with Li4Ti5O12 as anode and LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 as cathode, capable of > 1,000 cycles and just 0.024% capacity decay per cycle.
