• Low volatile aromatic thioethers are explored for selective extraction of Au and Pd. • The relationship between extractant structure and extraction performance is explored. • EMPES delivers outstanding extraction capacity for Au(III) (1319.2 mg·g−1) and Pd(II) (520.3 mg·g−1). • Effective recovery for Au(III) and Pd(II) from practical CPU and Pd-catalyst leachate.
