• Bisamino-groups modified biochar was created by combining chitosan with KH-550. • Statistical physics analysis was used to gain the steric and thermodynamic factors. • Testing data for Cu(II) and Co(II) were modeled via kinetic and isotherm models. • Cu(II) can be preferentially removed from the binary and quaternary mixed systems. • Adsorption mechanism of the BPS-CHIKH-MBC for Cu(II) and Co(II) was explored.
