• 7β-CuZnZr catalyst is prepared via an in-situ pyrolysis carbonization strategy. • 7β-CuZnZr exhibits robust performance with 12 % CO2 conversion and 87 % methanol selectivity. • β-cyclodextrin derived carbon species can mediate efficient hydrogen spillover. • The intermediates hydrogenation is kinetically accelerated by hydrogen spillover.
