• Lanolin acid rich in BCFAs showed significant anti-hepatoma activity. • OPLS and MLR were used to analyze the anti-hepatoma effect of BCFA in lanolin. • Some fatty acids such as iso-C16:0 and iso-C17:0 may have anti-hepatoma effects. • Iso-C13:0 may have a protective effect on HepG2 liver cancer cells. • The key fatty acids and their functional characteristics in lanolin acid were summarized.
