• A novel top-down strategy yields Ca₂Fe₂O₅ quantum dots that are magnetic yet highly dispersed. • The QDs create a high surface area with abundant surface-active oxygen species. • The quantum dots enable sensitive detection of tetracycline for sensing applications.
