The majority of methods for analyzing cable structures rely on the computation of the flexibility matrix and its inverse. In certain cases, this might result in computational mistakes and longer analytical procedures. This research proposes a new formulation for analyzing three-dimensional cable structures in Cartesian coordinates using inextensible catenaries. Specifically, this method is based on computing an accurate parabolic stiffness matrix for the cable element. The components of the stiffness matrix are obtained by defining the ratio of the infinitesimal load increment to the infinitesimal increase of the length. This formulation analyses the structure without the need for a transformation matrix. Besides, it can consider the effects of temperature variations. By introducing the start and end nodes of the structure, an explicit and accurate stiffness matrix for the cable element is defined. Various case studies have proven the precision and supremacy of this element over similar approaches. The results obtained demonstrate the good capacity of this element to solve cable structures effectively. In short, this formulation is suitable for computational studies since it can compute an explicit stiffness matrix.
