• The electric vehicles (EV) raise a safety concern regarding regenerative braking because of not activating brake lights. • This study investigated the effects of a novel brake light system of EV in regenerative braking scenarios on the following drivers. • We designed and conducted a within-subject driving simulator study with 24 young drivers. • The new system lead improved driving behaviors in terms of following-vehicle safety.
