• Insects have enough genetic variation to respond to natural selection, but these responses may be limited by genetic correlations among thermal traits. • Experimental evolution demonstrates that rapid evolution, when combined with sequencing studies, can reveal the genetic basis of adaptation. • Common-garden experiments reveal genetic differences among populations distributed along environmental gradients. • Multiple and integrative approaches enable to a better understanding of how insects adapt to a changing world.
