• Cations regulate outer-sphere PDS electrosynthesis via ·OH control, following K+ > NH4+ > Na+. • K+ lowers dehydration barrier for ·OH entry and delocalizes spin density, stabilizing ·OH to boost SO4-· formation. • K+ enhances PDS production from sulfate wastewater, offering a low-cost strategy than increasing concentration alone.
