A new method titled channel model extraction is studied in this paper. The proposed algorithm can simultaneously acquire the channel model dynamically during data detection. Most existing methods use a specific channel model. The model is calculated or measured before data transmission. Also, the specific channel model is given as a prior information and is used for subsequent steps including channel estimation, channel equalization and signal detection. The drawbacks of this method are twofold. Firstly, when the application scenario has changed, the fixed channel model may no longer be accurate enough. Secondly, the received signal has the information of the channel model. How to use this type of information is an open problem. Meanwhile, the structural characteristics of the transmitted signal have not been fully considered, either. So an online channel model extraction approach is meaningful for practical systems. The basic thought of the proposed channel model extraction method is to use the statistical characteristics of the received signal, the data and the noise to get the channel model. After that, the extracted channel model can be used to enhance the performance of data detection. Specifically, firstly both of the channel fading and data are described by predefined general models. Then a joint optimization objective regarding the key parameters of the two models is formulated. After that, through the solution of the optimization problem, an iterative mechanism between channel model extraction and data detection is established. Moreover, in order to make the proposed algorithm be more practical, the channel estimation error is also considered. As an example, a message-passing based algorithm is derived for MIMO-OFDM-IM (multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing index modulation). The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by simulations.
