Abstract

Abstract

Turbulence intensity (TI) is closely associated to the wind power generation efficiency, lifespan and structural safety of wind turbines. In this work, the impacts of a large wind turbine (with a height of 135 m and a blade length of 118 m) on the TI were investigated based on two high-resolution wind lidars in a coastal region. The results show that the wind speed (WS) from the bottom wind turbine tip to the top turbine tip in the downstream region was weakened due to the influence of the wind turbine. The wind turbine exhibited a greater impact on the daytime TI, causing an obvious increase (maximum increase of 8%) in the downstream region, especially from the hub height to the top turbine tip. The enhancement of the TI at night was strongest at the hub height. The probability density distribution of the daytime TI demonstrated that the TI in the downstream region was more concentrated around the mean value. The enhancement of the TI in the downstream region was greater in the WS bin of 0–9 m s−1, and the impact of the wind turbine was relatively small when the WS exceeded 12 m s−1. The three-parameter exponential model improved the daytime fitting performance compared with three-parameter power-law model for low TIs in the wind turbine rotor range (17–253 m) under high WSs.
