• Lanthanum based perovskite oxide (LaMnO3) were prepared by hydrothermal method. • Optimized LaMnO3 showed maximum ⁓70% sensitivity for water vapour gas at 1000 ppm gas concentration. • Optimized LaMnO3 showed water vapour gas response and recovery times of 16 and 45 s. • The good stability of LaMnO3 water vapour based gas sensor.
