AbstractHigh‐performance optical transmitters based on external modulator technologies have been used in 10 Gbps telecommunication systems for all applications that extend beyond a few kilometers. Such externally modulated transmitters require a continuous wave (CW) laser to provide the light source and a modulator to encode the digital data into the intensity of the light. Now, a new technology may eliminate the external modulators.
