• Fully bio-based chitosan-acid adhesives developed from renewable feedstocks. • Orthogonal reactivity enables solubilisation and in-situ network formation. • Chitosan itaconate shows strong adhesion and cohesive wood failure (C1 class). • Maintains near-C4 strength after boiling-water exposure (2.7 N mm−2). • Promising sustainable adhesive for moderate moisture-resistant wood bonding.
