• Co-impregnated vs. sequential Ce addition on Ni/Al2O3 are directly compared. • Ce incorporation delays NiAl2O4 formation, increasing accessible metallic Ni. • Ce-containing catalysts show less carbon graphitization, resisting coke buildup. • Co-impregnated 1 wt.% Ce gives highest DRM activity. • Sequential Ce impregnation masks Ni sites, lowering activity below Ni/Al2O3.
