• Molecular fractionations of crop-straw biochar DBC and DOM were revealed. • Magnetite has the highest sorption capacity, followed by ferrihydrite and hematite. • Iron oxyhydroxides preferentially adsorbed highly oxidized and unsaturated species. • Magnetite and ferrihydrite showed greater affinity for CHO compounds than hematite.
