• Three copula-based frameworks are systematically evaluated using 3D and 4D hydrological datasets. • Increased structural complexity does not automatically translate into improved GoF across all scenarios. • BMA-Vine provides the most robust and consistent performance, particularly for complex dependence structures characterized by asymmetry or tail dependence. • Model selection should balance structural flexibility, data characteristics, and computational efficiency.
