• Tested were 16 CFDST columns with external duplex stainless steel tubes under compressive loading. • Examined the effects of the hollow ratio and slenderness ratio on ultimate capacity. • Performed FE and parametric studies on CFDST columns with external duplex stainless steel tubes. • Proposed a new formula for predicting the ultimate axial capacity. • Built a dataset of 1862 samples and developed an XGBoost ultimate capacity predictor.
