Since the beginning of this century there has been an enormous increase in interest in ionic liquids, that is in molten salts that happen to be liquid at ambient conditions or at least below 100 degrees C. The contributions to this Discussion gave a good overview of the knowledge of the physical chemical aspects of these materials in 2011. Many experimental and computational results were reported and questions for future examination posed.
