Purpose of reviewModern medical ethics has prioritized patient rights and the importance of patient autonomy. This review article discusses the role conscientious objection plays within anesthesia while prioritizing the patient.Recent findingsThe literature on the role an anesthesiologist plays within medical ethics has been scant. This article reviews conscientious objection, the arguments for accommodating it, and the role of the anesthesiologist. In addition, this article reviews and discusses the role of conscientious objection within the changing healthcare climate. This article presents two differing views of the concept of institutional conscientious objection and a discussion of a newer concept of conscientious provider.SummaryWe argue for the importance of diversity and inclusion in provider recruitment, so that different perspectives are represented. Providers must be allowed to treat according to the standard of care regardless of the location and institution, honoring both conscientious objection to and conscientious provision of healthcare.
