• Cu3P-Gr catalyst was successfully synthesized via a simple route. • Cu3P-Gr catalyst shows the HER performance of 73 mV@10 mA cm−2. • Cu3P-Gr catalyst exhibits excellent durability for hydrogen evolution. • Combination of Gr with Cu3P can greatly enhance the HER activity.
