Cyclin-dependent kinase CDK1 targets cell-cell junction components and governs epithelial monolayer integrity throughout the cell cycle

The cyclin-dependent kinase CDK1 is essential for cell cycle progression and controls cellular processes that are limited to specific phases of the cell cycle. Dantas et al. found that CDK1 also promotes epithelial cohesion and barrier function throughout the cell cycle. In monolayers of cultured epithelial cells, a pool of CDK1 localized to cell-cell contacts and phosphorylated components of cell junctions. Inhibition or transient depletion of CDK1 perturbed cell junctions, reduced intercellular cohesion, and permeabilized monolayers. The findings identify a cell cycle–independent role for CDK1 in maintaining epithelial integrity. —Annalisa M. VanHook
