A new, quantitative, non-destructive evaluation technique is described for estimating both the severity and spatial extent of damage in engineering materials. The technique exploits the unique decay character of non-proportionally damped systems. Theoretical expressions relating decay and damage characteristics are presented and compared with physical experiments on an analogous system.
