Theories about experiential learning and expert performance place reflection as a vital mechanism which operates at different levels according to whether we are responding to a situation as it unfolds or critically reviewing past events to make sense of what occurred. We describe work carried out with small teams of industrial design students on the point of entering professional practice in which the potential of video story-making for supporting critical reflection about design experience was explored. We conclude that the process of story construction presents rich opportunities for making sense of both design education and design practice. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
