Recently, the random ray method (TRRM) has emerged as a promising alternative for shielding calculations, demonstrating considerable potential in both computational efficiency and accuracy. Based on TRRM, we developed the three-dimensional particle transport code THETA for radiation shielding analysis, which has been successfully verified against several shielding benchmarks. Nevertheless, the flat source approximation (FSA) in standard TRRM, as implemented in THETA, is insufficient for shielding scenarios with steep flux gradients, as it requires a finer computational mesh to reduce discretization errors. To address these issues, we extended the linear source approximation (LSA) based TRRM framework to THETA and comprehensively validated its accuracy and efficiency against neutron shielding benchmarks. Numerical results demonstrate that the TRRM based on LSA allows the use of significantly coarser computational meshes compared to the traditional FSA scheme, thereby reducing memory requirements by over a factor of 10 and computational time by nearly 50% without compromising accuracy.
