阴道镜检查对于澄清宫颈癌筛查中收集到的异常筛查结果（细胞学检查、人乳头瘤病毒[HPV]检测）具有极其重要的意义。在德国自2020年1月1日起实施的有序癌症筛查指南中，采用一种澄清算法来规定何时指示“澄清性阴道镜检查”。德国法定医疗保险医师全国协会的质量保证协议规定了执行澄清性阴道镜检查的要求。阴道镜检查结果根据国际癌症预防与阴道镜检查联合会（IFCPC）2011年的里约分类（Rio分类）进行评估。带活检和/或宫颈管搔刮术（ECC）的澄清性阴道镜检查可以避免不必要的切除术。无明显异常的阴道镜检查结果与发生宫颈高级别病变的风险极低相关。
