• First synthesis of bulk 413-type Ge-based MAX phases, expanding the o-MAX family beyond Al-based systems. • Discovery of robust Ti-Cr out-of-plane chemical ordering in these novel Ge-based o-MAX phases. • The chemical ordering is preserved even in quaternary metal compositions. • The phases exhibit tunable high stiffness and good ductility, filling a gap in Ge-based MAX properties.
