• PGM mine by-products release Mg and Ca under CO2-saturated conditions for CDR. • Tailings reacted faster than slags and overburden, comparable to basalts/gabbros. • Coarser particles reacted faster than finer due to chemical and physical effects. • Freshly produced tailings reacted faster than partially weathered pond tailings. • PGM by-products could enable large-scale CO2 removal under optimal conditions.
