• PEDOT:PSS films galvanostatically synthesised at 0 °C exhibits Na+ exchange. • In situ ellipsometry tracks redox-driven optical changes. • Applied methodology that allows to extract n, k, and thickness vs applied potential. • Reversible contraction/expansion with ∼200% swelling in reduction. • Potential cathode to offset anode volume changes in batteries.
