• 13 drivers used 2020 Tesla Model 3 vehicles as their own for one month. • Autopilot gave these drivers alerts that looked the same but had different triggers. • Some alerts appear associated with the road environment, others with driver behavior. • Driver readiness alerts activated when certain roadway features were nearby. • Drivers behaved differently around these alerts compared with attention reminders.
